The "alpha" site

Our Purpose

Geaux Green Design was formed as a subsidiary of Commercial Design Interiors, LLC. The company’s vision is to create an avenue to research and explore green design strategies that refer to vernacular design strategies from the past, current accessible technologies and methods, and implementation of emerging technologies. Through this vision, Geaux Green Design has three goals:

·        GOAL ONE: To create an environment where sustainable strategies and methods can be hypothesized, researched, implemented and observed.

·        GOAL TWO: Continue to build a stronger relationship with  local higher education giving students and professors  a venue to explore sustainable strategies through in-class studios and in-field application and observation.

·        GOAL THREE: To be a resource and educate local communities, businesses and professionals on implementation of affordable and sustainable building practices.

The Case Study

Geaux Green Design has established a project site (currently referred to as the “alpha” site) as a vehicle to implement these goals. The “alpha” site located in the Oklahoma panhandle was chosen due to favorable economics, local vernacular design and central to various sustainable design works and strategies (wind farms, land management, multiple LEED projects within 80 mile radius).

To successfully achieve goal one, it will be collaboration between the design field, education field, manufacturers and their representatives, and local communities.  With these participants, a holistic approach to this endeavor can be achieved. Commercial Design Interiors, LLC will be one of these participants providing initial logistical support, program support, “alpha” site development and initial funding. As the vision and purpose for Geaux Green Design evolves, this will be an enabling tool to satisfy the goal “To create an environment where sustainable strategies and methods can be hypothesized, researched, implemented and observed”. The “alpha” site will be a focusing element of this endeavor with a +/- 1000 sq. ft. multipurpose pavilion as its first project. The development of this pavilion will allow several strategies to be studied and ultimately implemented.

For goal two, collaboration between the Private Sector and Higher Education is a win-win for sustainable design education. The collaboration is enabling. The Private Sector, through Geaux Green Design, provides professors, faculty and students a vehicle to create sustainable design project briefs that have real statistical data, documented project site and in-field implementation and observation opportunities. Higher Education provides the Private Sector a means for a holistic approach. The integration and cooperation of design faculty and students in departments such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Interior Design are critical for the seamless implementation of meaningful and long lasting sustainable strategies. This collaboration between the private sector and higher education will mold faculty and students alike to be the emerging green builders of the future. Each of these participants will leave with the knowledge to design; collaborate with multiple disciplines, implement methods, and push the envelope on sustainable design strategies.
